Denver Airport to Breckenridge: Do You Need a Rental Car?

Flying into Denver and staying in Breckenridge? You do not have to rent at the airport. Many visitors take a shuttle up I-70, then rent locally only for the days they want a car. Here is how that works, what it costs, and when an airport rental is still the better call. One thing up front: we do not operate at DIA and we do not do one-way rentals.

Denver Airport to Breckenridge: Your Options

Option 1: Shuttle up, local SUV when you need it

Shared and private shuttles run from DIA straight to Breckenridge hotels and condos year-round. The ride is about two to two and a half hours. Once you are in town, book one of our AWD SUVs for the days you plan to leave Breckenridge: ski Keystone, Copper or Vail, drive to Frisco for dinner, or do a scenic loop. We deliver the car to your lodging with a keypad door code, and pick it up when you are done. You pay for the days you drive, not the days the car sits in a parking lot.

Option 2: Rent at the airport for the whole trip

Best if you will drive every day, if you need a one-way rental, or if your group is spread across towns. Factor in airport concession fees and facility charges, overnight parking at your lodging, and the fact that AWD and snow tires are not guaranteed at a counter. Check the I-70 traction law status before you set out in winter.

Option 3: Drive your own car up, and rent a bigger one here

Locals and Front Range visitors sometimes leave the sedan at home and rent a 7-passenger AWD Explorer for the mountain days. Free pickup at our Breckenridge lot makes that easy.

A quick cost example

Family of four, seven nights in Breckenridge, planning to drive on four of those days. Option 1: four shuttle seats each way, plus four days of a 7-passenger AWD Explorer delivered to the condo. Option 2: seven days of a mid-size SUV at the airport, plus airport fees, plus seven nights of lodging parking. In most seasons Option 1 comes out ahead and you skip the I-70 drive after a flight. For a two-night trip where you drive every day, Option 2 usually wins. Prices move with the season, so plug in your dates on our booking page and compare.

Frequently asked

Do you offer car rental at Denver International Airport?

No. We are a Breckenridge company and we do not pick up or drop off at DIA, and we do not offer one-way rentals. We deliver anywhere in Summit County and offer free pickup in Breckenridge.

How do I get from Denver airport to Breckenridge without renting a car?

Shared and private shuttles run directly from DIA to Breckenridge lodging year-round, about two to two and a half hours each way. Several companies serve the route; book ahead in ski season. Once you are in town, we deliver an AWD SUV to your door for the days you actually want a car.

Is shuttle plus local rental cheaper than renting at the airport?

It depends on your group and how many days you need a car. For a family staying a week who only wants a car for three or four days of skiing other resorts, shuttle plus local delivery is usually cheaper than paying airport fees and seven days of rental plus parking. For a couple on a two-day trip who will drive every day, the airport rental often wins. Run the numbers for your trip.

Can I rent from you for the drive back to Denver?

Not as a one-way; the car has to come back to Breckenridge. If you need a ride down, take a shuttle. If you need a car in town until the morning you leave, we pick it up from your lodging after you go.

Do I need AWD on I-70 to Breckenridge?

In winter, often yes. Colorado’s traction law on I-70 requires AWD or 4WD with adequate tread, or chains or traction devices on 2WD cars, whenever it is active. Airport fleets do not guarantee AWD; every car we deliver is AWD on winter tires.
